A Year of Change

In 2022, the Board witnessed significant change to the composition of the Police Services Board, with the appointment of five new members: Ajax Mayor Shaun Collier, Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter and Regional Councillor Willie Woo were all appointed by Regional Council following the municipal election in the Fall. The Provincial Government also appointed two citizens, Ms. Shashi Bhatia and Mr. Mark Welch, for three-year terms in 2022. The Board would like to extend its gratitude and appreciation to all Board members who bid farewell over the course of the year: Mr. Kevin Ashe, Ms. Patrice Barnes, Ms. Bobbie Drew, Mr. Steve deBoer, and Mr. John Henry. The Board is grateful for their dedication to excellence in police governance and community safety during their time on the Board.

Searching for New Leadership

Leadership change at the DRPS also appeared on the horizon for the Board during 2022. Chief Rollauer announced in the summer that he would be retiring in early 2023, setting in motion a process to select the next Chief of Police. At the outset, the Board emphasized the importance of a comprehensive, independent selection process that prioritized the skills and attributes identified during community and member consultations. Retired Chiefs Jolliffe and Clunis, as well as Waterhouse Executive Search were engaged to support and advise the Board in finding the best possible candidate.
